Education for PeaceEducative Meditation ©
This is a program based on a meditation technique integrated with other complementary practices. It includes a set of self-knowledge educational principles to encourage self-development and nurture coexistence. It was created by Isha Judd, who through the Educational Foundation brought together a multidisciplinary team of professionals to assist in designing a comprehensive program covering all levels of education: preschool, school, or university, and other educational areas such as health, psychology, psych pedagogy, arts, communication, human relations, peace culture, intercultural dialogue and social cohesion.
The Educative Meditation© technique develops the universal values of appreciation, gratitude, love and unity.
Complementary practices promote holistic health.
- Experiencing full consciousness or being in the doing.
- Nourishing and hydrating the body..
- Sharing thoughts honestly.
- Expressing feelings openly.
The educational principles of self-knowledge are
- Happiness, peace and love are an internal experience (develops introspection)
- Emotions are natural. One must feel and manage them properly (facilitates emotional development)
- What you focus on grows (fosters value-based education)
- Relationship with self is reflected in the relationship with others (breeds responsibility)
Meditation integrated with the complementary practices develops the self and the ability to co-exist, by leading us to a state of inner peace and incorporating values that generate positive behavioral change.
From a theoretical and practical point of view, the educational principles of self-knowledge have the same effect, and all the components of Educative Meditation© work synergistically.
Use of Educative Meditation© to strengthen UNESCO´s Four Pillars of Education.
In 1996, UNESCO’s International Commission on Education for the Twenty-First Century published the report “Learning: The Treasure Within”. This marked a milestone in history because it established “universally valid analyses and unanimously accepted conclusions” as a new vision for education.
Promote the educational principles of self-knowledge
→ Happiness, peace and love are an inner experience (development of introspection)
→ Emotions are natural and must be felt and conducted properly (development of emotional learning)
→ What you focus on grows in life (development of education in values)
→ The relationship with oneself is reflected in the relationship with others (development of responsibility)
Promoting comprehensive health
→ Learn to experience full consciousness or to be in doing.
→ Do physical exercise.
→ Feed and hydrate the body properly.
→ Express thoughts honestly.
→ Express feelings openly.
This initiative, led by Jacques Delors, pinpointed four “pillars” considered “foundations for learning that must be implemented in the enhancement of education in the twenty-first century”.The four pillars that have been accepted by UNESCO as the basis for educational reform are:
Learn to know
Learn to do
Learn to live together
Learn to be
The report also points out the great educational lack in developing the last two pillars. However, when students develop their ability to be and to coexist, they naturally have the desire to know and do, and they explore all aspects of learning with joy.
For the past fifteen years, members of Isha Judd´s International Foundation have been dedicated to cultivating these last two pillars in individuals and communities at all levels of the socio-economic spectrum, particularly in Latin America. This is done so that individuals reach their maximum potential and they develop the values of compassion, empathy, service and responsibility, all of which are the basis of a peaceful and harmonious society.
For this reason, the Foundation wishes to introduce its findings and methodologies as a formal educational proposal, within the framework established by the distinguished humanitarian thinkers who helped shape the vision of UNESCO. It may be applied in schools, universities, communities and organizations to develop these two pillars. Our proposal,Educative Meditation©, was created with these noble sentiments in mind. It is a series of practical and universal tools for learning to be and learning to live together.
